Lady Columbia

This piece was done 4 days in a row on Deanna's client, who flew in from New Mexico. The composition is a great example of Deanna's ability to mix personal requests from the client into her typical imagery to create a unique design. Part of Deanna's Ladies with Swords series, the client requested to represent Lady Columbia as a nod to her own military service. The flag, a subject never before featured in Deanna's pieces, is rendered in a painterly style in the background of the lower leg, allowing the portrait to remain the focal point of the piece. This design is also a masterclass in flow and body placement. The wreath at the top fits the client's anatomy perfectly. Unseen in this image, the torch on the front of the thigh provides the glow and dynamic lighting on the portrait. By Deanna James.
