Sovereignty Bodysuit in Progress

This large-scale front piece was created for Oliver, a longtime client from Germany whom Renan has been tattooing for over a decade. What began as four coverups, two on each arm, gradually evolved into sleeves, and eventually into a much larger journey centered around leadership, strength, and personal presence. The lion was chosen as the embodiment of those qualities, not only symbolically as the king of the jungle, but compositionally as well, acting as the central point that connects the sleeves while leading the eye toward the back piece (currently in progress). What makes the piece particularly significant within Renan’s body of work is its fusion of influences: the structural discipline of Japanese tattooing merged with a highly intentional and contemporary approach to light, shadow, and form. Rather than following the established rules of either traditional Japanese or Neo-Traditional tattooing, the project challenges both, using elements of each in service of the body itself. The result is a composition that transformed a practical coverup project into the foundation of an evolving bodysuit, making a clear statement of Renan’s belief that artistic innovation should always serve the body rather than style.
